Author : John Ruskin
Fors Clavigera: Letters to the Workmen and Labourers of Great Britain is a series by English writer and philosopher John Ruskin, first published in the 1870s. This is the first volume of eight that consisted of a series of letters addressed to British workmen, that were originally published in the form of pamphlets. The letters cover a wide range of subjects that Ruskin believed would effectively convey his moral and social vision, which he initially expressed in his 1860 book, Unto This Last. His primary focus was to cultivate a notion of moral worth within genuine labor. The ‘Fors’ part of the title means three powers, and the Clavigera comes Force, symbolised by the club (clava) of Hercules; Fortitude, symbolised by the key (clavis) of Ulysses; and Fortune, symbolised by the nail (clavus) of Lycurgus.
