- Author:
Marcus Terentius Varro (116-27 BC) was the most important Roman scholar ever. No other Roman was equal to his productivity; he authored over 70 works on the cultural history of Rome, agriculture, philosophy and the Latin language. In late antiquity, he was an inexhaustible treasure trove for cultural historical findings through his enormously wide work. From his large work “De lingua Latina” at least a quarter is handed down: the part with the etymologies (book V-VII) reads like a manual of (alt-)Roman culture; the second part (VIII-X) treats rhetorically gripping and quite amusing the grammatical analogy. For the first time, “De lingua Latina” is now translated into German. In numerous places, the Latin text has been fundamentally improved; a thorough philological and linguistic commentary opens up the text and makes the bilingual edition an indispensable reading for anyone interested in Latin and the (ancient) Roman culture.
